Web

In my day job I am an HTML/CSS programmer for IBM. I work on the user interfaces for the Lotus Brand web applications. So I don’t have much to show for myself. It’s all pretty much proprietary. But I have plans to create a space on this site where I can show off my web abilities. Maybe. If I can find the time outside of my photography-on-the-side endeavors.

However, I do have a blog that offers help for HTML/CSS developers - mostly really obscure, icky bugs that I find when trying to make things work in all major browsers (including Internet Explorer 6, bleh), in right-to-left languages, and in high contrast mode. When you have to start paying attention to all that stuff, you find issues. Really obscure, icky bugs. As I said before. And so I document them.

The complexity of the designs I am given at work (which contribute to the icky bug syndrome) prompted me to start a blog there called Keep it Simple.  That’s where the tag line in this blog comes from.  I like clean, neat web designs that are usable by everybody, where you don’t need to bend over backwards and hold your breath to get them to render correctly in a browser.

While I’m on the topic of the web, I’m really liking Wordpress and the flexibility it offers for creating a website. I started doing my own thing as far as a look goes - until I found the theme I am using now. I’m probably going to head in there and tweak a few styles, but it pretty much fits what I wanted to do with this site, which is mostly focused on photography, because that’s what I’m really into these days. (I think I mentioned that already.)

Last note on web stuff. I haven’t tested this site across browsers. But I’ve heard rumors that this theme doesn’t work so well in Internet Explorer 6. I have to care about that in my day job. But Internet Explorer 6 is a very old browser and needs to go away. I have the liberty of ignoring it for my personal web site. And that’s what I plan on doing.  With no apologies.
